Gender autonomy may be the unsung hero in the war against authoritarianism. We don’t see it getting a lot of press at the moment, but that doesn’t mean the issue isn’t vital to unseating power structures that repress us all.
Several people I know and love actively express their gender in terms other than what was assigned to them at birth. And while some people focus solely on which pronouns they use, gender autonomy is so much more. We’re talking about the basic right of self-determination, to freely express and experience their own gender identity without coercion, violence, or external control. At the end of the day, is gender autonomy really any different from any other form of individual autonomy? I don’t think so.
The Problem Of Authority
At its core, authoritarianism is an exercise in strict categorization. For an oppressive system to function—whether it is a heavy-handed government, a dogmatic religious institution, or a patriarchal family structure—it must accurately predict and cleanly control the behavior of the people it desires to control. To achieve this, it relies on unquestioned assumptions about human nature. Chief among these assumptions is the rigid, immutable gender binary: the idea that humanity is divided into two distinct, unchangeable categories determined solely at birth.
When an individual identifies their gender as something other than male or female, or differs from what was assigned to them at birth, they are not merely expressing a personal preference. They are committing a profound act of anti-authoritarian rebellion. Gender autonomy strikes at the very root of authoritarian control by proving that the system’s most foundational “truths” are actually fragile constructs.
This is where we see authoritarian personalities have a meltdown
The Blueprint of Compliance
For most American and European authoritarians, the trouble starts with a strict adherence to Genesis 1:27: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” You’ll hear authoritarians demand complete adherence to what they wrongfully consider to be the equivalent of scientific fact. In their opinion, if their deity decrees only two genders, then there’s no room for argument. There can only be two choices, and anything outside those choices, in their opinion, is wrong. They don’t allow any room for any mode of gender autonomy.
The male/female binary serves as the foundational blueprint for authoritarian control. It prescribes behaviors, dictates roles, limits emotional expression, and creates a clear power dynamic. If an authority figure can convince you that you don’t control your own identity, they have effectively outsourced your cognitive and physical autonomy. From the very beginning of life, we are conditioned to look outward for permission to exist. Therefore, strict adherence to assigned gender is not just about tradition; it is the ultimate training ground for systemic obedience.
Gender Autonomy Shatters the Illusion of “Natural Law”
Authoritarians justify their control by claiming their rules are backed by an infallible higher power—be it biology, nature, or a deity. They present their societal structures as “natural law.” They’re peddling a lie, and for much of the past 2,000 years or so, people have bought that lie.
However, gender autonomy shatters this illusion entirely. When a person steps outside the binary, they demonstrate that what the authoritarian labeled as “objective reality” was actually just a heavily enforced script. If the state, the church, or the prevailing culture is wrong about something as fundamental as who you are and what your body means, a dangerous question inevitably arises: What else are they wrong about?
The answer to that question frightens those in power, because they know they’re wrong about a lot of things. Gender autonomy is just the beginning.
Neurobiological Research Upholds Gender Autonomy
This is where we get to document the proof. Let’s start with brain structure studies. According to the National Institutes of Health, neuroimaging research shows that the brain structures and functional connectivity of some transgender and gender-diverse individuals share similarities with the neuroanatomy of their self-identified gender rather than their sex assigned at birth. Think about that: the brain of a gender-diverse person adapts to the self-identified gender. The brain is far more complex than government or other organizations. If the brain can adapt, so can society.
Then, there are prenatal and genetic factors. Studies on prenatal hormone exposure and genetic markers indicate that sexual differentiation of the genitals and the brain occur at separate developmental stages, allowing for independent biological variation (National Library of Medicine).
And while we’re talking science stuff, scientific consensus increasingly distinguishes biological sex (gametes, chromosomes) from gender identity, recognizing identity as a complex neurobiological and psychological phenomenon. While funding for this continued area of research has suffered over the past year and a half, there are places where it continues (primarily in Europe), and the evidence points strongly to gender identity being a neurobiological phenomenon.
The Domino Effect of Dissent
When an individual successfully reclaims their identity, the psychological hold of the authoritarian structure begins to crumble. This act of self-determination triggers a powerful domino effect.
Imagine standing up and claiming the power to say, “No, your antiquated, misguided rules do not define who I am,” knowing you have the ability to back up that statement with a litany of facts that defy mythological binaries. When one pillar cracks, the others start to crumble. Laws change. Policies are altered. Identity is recognized.
One frequent talking point from authoritarian sources revolves around gender affirming care, especially for teens. The power structure is against this because if they lose control of people between the ages of 12 and 18, they lose the entire generation for a lifetime.
Yet, the evidence is in favor of gender autonomy. Gender affirming care reduces stress (American Society for Cell Biology), has low rates of regret and high efficacy (ibid.), and increases meaning in life and reduces existential isolation (Journal of Humanistic Psychology). Every argument made by authoritarian structures falls flat against a growing wall of evidence.
Fighting For Sovereign Reality
Ultimately, the fight for gender autonomy is a fight for sovereign reality. Authoritarians want you to surrender to their will and not employ your own. They want you to give up any agency that is inherent to your humanity. Their entire game plan depends on their ability to stay in control.
Gender autonomy is the explicit refusal to surrender. It is the radical assertion that you are the sole author of your identity. It is a declaration that the complex, deeply personal landscape of the human experience cannot be standardized, legislated, or neatly sorted into two boxes for the convenience of those who wish to rule.
By existing unapologetically outside the expected parameters of assigned gender, individuals do more than find personal peace. They provide living, breathing evidence that the rigid walls of authoritarian control are an illusion. They show us that true freedom begins exactly where the system’s assumed authority ends: within the sovereign bounds of the self.
I love the various non-binary and gender-different people in my life. They demonstrate on a daily basis what it means to own who you are and live that identity to its fullest. It is the duty and responsibility of the rest of us to support their autonomy. Loudly.
